There are 7 different classifications of forklifts as determined by the Industrial Truck Association or ITA. These categories are divided into the kind of work setting; indoors, outdoors, rough or smooth surfaces and narrow aisle; by the kind of engine; whether the operator is sitting down or standing; and lastly the characteristics of the equipment, regarding the maximum grade and type of tire. Several of the categories are further sub-divided by operating characteristics. Here are the following lift truck classifications:
Category 1 Forklifts: are considered to be electric motor trucks with air filled or pneumatic tires or cushion tires. The Class 1 lift trucks also consist of 4 lift codes, or subcategories which are:
Lift Code 1: Counterbalanced, stand up rider models.
Lift Code 4: 3-Wheel electric sit-down units.
Lift Code 5: Counterbalanced rider, cushion tire sit down tires.
Lift Code 6: Includes pneumatic tire units, counterbalanced rider, and sit-down rider.
Class 2 Forklifts: Class 2 forklifts consist of narrow aisle electric trucks with solid tires.
Category 3 Forklifts: The class 3 lift truck will consist of all hand/rider trucks fuel and electric based with solid tires.
Class 4 Forklifts: The IC or internal combustion units make up Class 4 forklifts. These are sit down rider units with cushion tires. Normally, they are suitable for indoor application and on hard surfaces.
Category 5 Forklifts: Internal Combustion sit down rider forklifts equipped with pneumatic tires make up Class 5 forklifts. Typically, these models are ideal for working areas with significant inclines or on rough surfaces outdoors.
Class 6 Forklifts: The Class 6 lift trucks are either IC powered or electric units. These ride-on units could tow at least 1000 pounds. This category is engineered and designed to tow cargo rather than lift it.
Category 7 Forklifts: Class 7 only included rough terrain units with pneumatic tires. The Category 7 forklifts are almost exclusively used outside and powered by diesel engines.
These categories were designed to keep the huge field of lift trucks organized and separated. In order to get their work done, various working atmospheres rely on various classifications. Forklifts are quite particular in their lifting and loading capacities. Their various types of tires and engines are made for specific applications.
