Inspect a Forklift
Workplace injuries related to forklift operation within North America average about over 10,000 every year, based on the statistics from OSHA and the HRSDC. Some injuries result from the lack of maintenance of the machine and correct equipment inspection. Other injuries are caused by operator error.
Injuries are not the only issues that are related to the operation and maintenance of forklifts. Another serious issue is property damage. Lift truck mishaps could result in damage to sprinklers, overhead pipes, and other machinery and building walls. By completing thorough inspections on a daily basis, you could help lessen forklift injuries.
When starting an inspection, turn off the engine. Check the levels of the engine oil, fuel, brake fluid, hydraulic oil and coolant. Visually check the tires of the machine looking for signs of wear, appropriate air pressure and general condition. Visually check the forks on the front of the equipment as well. Confirm the condition of the top-clip retaining pin and heel. Make sure that the backrest is attached securely. Make sure that both the finger guard and overhead are attached. Visually check the cables and stops, the hydraulic hoses and the mast chains as well.
You must check the propane tank if you are utilizing LP or liquid propane forklifts. Check for any signs of corrosion, damage or rust. Be certain that the battery has adequate electrolyte levels and that is adequately charged. Visually check all belts. Check to confirm the location of the owner's manual and make sure it is situated in the designated on-board storage compartment. Verify the hood latch and make certain that it is functioning as it is supposed to. Inspect the seatbelt and make certain it is functioning correctly and securely latches.
After completing the above steps, turn the engine on. Carefully listen to the engine. Investigate any strange sounds immediately. Make sure that both the service brake and the parking brake are properly working. Confirm that the steering controls and the accelerator are functioning at optimum performance levels.
