History
In 1919, Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG was started. The company was established by Anton Raky, an engineer and pioneer in oil drilling and modern drilling technology. The first name of the company was Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.
The cornerstone for SMAG was laid in the year 1937, when the Salzgitter Group purchased a manufacturing facility for its constructing drilling machinery. In 1986, the company purchased the grab product division from Peiner AG. Soon after, Peiner was developed into an international brand in the succeeding years. Presently, SMAG is the world's market leader, using grabs for waste disposal, global cargo handling applications and agriculture.
