A stock picker, also referred to as an order picker is a machine which is somewhat similar to a forklift. It allows the operator to utilize forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some objects, and this feature is something the forklift does not provide. Typically, order pickers are powered by electricity. These machines are mainly used in a warehouse setting. Usually they are used for moving pallets and completing particular jobs in the stocking and shelving department.
The order picker operator utilizes controls to control the unit from a platform setting that usually sits fairly near the ground. The operator is able to direct the machine to go forward, backward or steer it from side to side. Once the operator has positioned the unit in place the tines could be lifted up to the required level which makes it convenient for the operator. Like for instance, if the needed materials, are located on a shelf which the operator could not reach, then whole platform is capable of being raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight situated at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
After the order has been picked, the platform is lowered back to its original position. Then the order picker could be driven to its next load. With most models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, although, some companies might have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker is also able to place pallets on a shelf. Stackers and forklifts could be used to finish these particular tasks at several companies instead.
